YOUNG ALUMNI OF THE YEAR
In 2019, Tanglin Trust School established the annual Alumni of the Year award to recognise Alumni who have distinguished themselves in areas of Professional Excellence, Sports, Art or Community Engagement. The school hoped these awards would help recognise the impact of a Tanglin education and connect Alumni across the years.
This year, a new, fifth award category has been added – Young Alumni of the Year. Whilst Tanglin was founded almost 100 years ago in 1925, the Senior School wasn’t established until the early 2000s, with the first Sixth Form cohort graduating in 2003. With this in mind, the school has decided to honour this group of younger Alumni with the Young Alumni of the Year Award (for Alumni 19 to 30 years of age).
We are pleased to award Cameron Tweed (2021 cohort) as the first recipient of Young Alumni of the Year Award. Cameron attended Tanglin from Reception to Year 5 and relocated to the UK in 2012 where he continued his education.
Whilst at Tanglin he performed in three Wild Rice pantomimes and the popular children's TV programme Mat Yoyo. Back in the UK he did several voiceovers and presented for Nickelodeon and appeared in West End Live alongside students from Sylvia Young Theatre School before taking on the lead role of 'Billy' in the original UK production of Big the Musical with Jay McGuiness and Jessica Martin.
"Cameron was a gorgeous, fun and sparkly child in my Year One Class in 2008. There were many memorable moments with this class throughout the year, though one particular interaction still resounds with me. In the midst of learning some new measurement skills, Cameron called above the hustle and bustle of measuring tapes and children’s chatter,
“Mrs Sansom can I tell you something?” His face was lit up with a beaming smile.
With great certainty and conviction, he continued,
“I am going to be a dancer when I grow up!”
His eyes sparkled with passion as he relayed this important message, an exciting moment of realisation and clarity. What amazing achievements you have accomplished so far. Thank you Cameron for sharing your dream with me all those years ago."
- Katie Sansom, Cameron's Year 1 Teacher
His dancing soon took him to the world stage and major competitions. He is now a 5-time World Tap Champion. He has had much success both in the Junior and Adult divisions in the World Tap Dancing Championships. He has represented Team GB most notably winning the Junior Male Solo World Champion, Adult Trio, Adult Small Group and Junior Duo. His tap dancing was also recorded and featured in Paddington the movie.
He impressed us not only with his tap-dancing prowess and the training that goes into succeeding at the highest level of dancing, but also how he has equally excelled in his studies. Upon completing his A level, he was accepted to study Law at Oxford where he continues his competitive dancing regime around a busy university timetable. In addition to dance, he successfully auditioned for the university’s famous ‘Out of the Blue’ group and for the past two years has worked tirelessly with the group to raise funds for Helen & Douglas House Children's Charity, the UK’s first Children's Hospice, where he is a regular visitor, performing for the children and their families at fundraising events.
Congratulations, Cameron, on being named Tanglin Young Alumni of the Year 2023.
