Studying abroad was indeed one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences I have had. Through this life-changing experience, I was able to fully immerse myself in the Spanish language and culture while exploring Madrid and other cities across Spain! The personal and professional growth I experienced during this trip has undoubtedly influenced my career and life goals and will continue to impact me for years to come.

Whilst my study abroad experience was coordinated through my university, the Alumni Grant enabled me to access additional resources and opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the Spanish language, culture, and history.

I lived with an incredible Spanish host family who welcomed me into their lives, allowing me to experience Spain authentically from the perspective of a local family.

Being one of the cultural centres of Europe for thousands of years, this experience truly broadened my horizons and grew my appreciation for Spain’s marvellous, rich and diverse culture. Some highlights include the opportunity to experience the famous Las Ramblas de Barcelona and La Mezquita-Catedral de Cordoba and taking a traditional flamenco class in Seville!

I also had the opportunity to visit several museums and exhibitions including the Prado, Bilbao Guggenheim, General Archives of the Spanish Civil War in Salamanca and Thyssen-Bornemisza which greatly enriched my understanding of the intersection of art and history in Spain.

I even revisited a presentation I had made in Year 13 on Picasso to prepare for my visit to the Reina Sofia to see Guernica in person!

To improve my Spanish and truly experience Spain the right way, I took a language pledge - only speaking in Spanish to my host family, fellow classmates and professors.

All my classes were also taught fully in Spanish! I took classes on the History of Islam in Spain, the Representation of Women in Spanish Art, and the Intersection of Fashion and Sustainability. All of which enabled me to delve further into Spanish history and culture, something I am innately passionate about.

Studying in Madrid not only piqued my interest in a pursuing an international career that will allow me to travel and engage with diverse cultures and communities but also allowed me to develop and gain many practical skills that will last a lifetime.

I am so grateful to the Tanglin Foundation for facilitating such a wonderful experience and would love to speak with any current Tanglin students considering a student abroad or exchange program in the future!
