Megan Rennie, Year 2 class teacher & Tanglin Alumna (Cohort 2017)
Why Tanglin is special to me: Inspiring, Community, Home
"I joined Tanglin in Nursery in 2002 and graduated in Year 13 in 2017. Since we moved house often, Tanglin felt like my second home. My family is from the UK—my younger brother also attended Tanglin, and my mum worked in the Senior Maths Department and Junior School. Sadly, my dad passed away in March 2023 from Pancreatic Cancer. Back then, I was heavily involved in music as I joined almost every concert! My favourites were the ensemble concerts and year group productions in Junior School. I also loved the St George’s Christmas concert. It made me feel very festive!
Before starting university, I interned with the Senior music department in August 2017. I highly recommend anyone to join Tanglin’s internship programme because working with the warm and talented music team has always been fun and rewarding. I was also the Assistant Head Girl in Year 13. I loved being part of that team, as we worked to strengthen connections across the school.
I went on to study Education with Psychology at Durham University. This course unfortunately ended with me being in lockdown, so I was able to stay very focused on writing my dissertation! After that, I completed the Primary PGCE at Durham University where I gained invaluable experience during my placement. Navigating a second lockdown and bubbles made it both interesting and intense. Once I qualified, I started working in a small school in North East London. It was tough, but I learned so much. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, so when I qualified, I knew I wanted to return to Tanglin. Stepping through the gate was a bittersweet moment, as I wished I could tell my dad that I had achieved my dream of becoming a Tanglin teacher.
I think it’s just really cool that I have joined Tanglin as a faculty member in its Centenary year. I saw T85 and T90, but I didn’t think I’d be back for Tanglin’s 100th birthday. Happy Birthday, Tanglin! Thank you for everything you’ve done for me and the students, past and present, at Tanglin. Here’s to another 100 years!"
