Alumni Memories |
Rosie's Father
Rosie's father, Charlie Wilson, was among the first five students at Tanglin. Her family has a longstanding legacy with the school, spanning over four generations who have attended Tanglin at some point or another during their formative years.
Early Years at Tanglin Trust School
Rosie Montefiore ((née Wilson) was born in Singapore at the old KK Hospital. Alongside her three brothers—John, Patrick, and Alan—Rosie spent her formative years in Singapore. The British school option at the time was limited to Tanglin or service schools, and so, at the age of three, Rosie began her educational journey at Tanglin Preparatory School.
School Life on Holland Road
Located on Holland Road near the Botanic Gardens, Tanglin Preparatory School. l was a modest institution with just one class per year group. The original site of the school is now home to a condominium. Rosie recalls the school fondly, especially the vibrant community and the dedicated teachers. One of her most cherished memories is of Miss Griff, our school's founder to whom she presented flowers upon her retirement, with her father presenting a special gift in appreciation.
Tanglin Club and Family Life
Rosie was also a junior member of the Tanglin Club, a significant part of her family life. She and her family would frequent the club three or four times a week for swimming lessons, races, and suppers. Sunday curry lunches were a family tradition, and as Rosie grew older, she enjoyed the film showings on the open verandah in the early evenings.
A Journey of Return
In 1962, Rosie left Singapore to board in England. However, her connection to Tanglin remained strong. In her early twenties, Rosie returned to Singapore, and her son, Robert, attended Tanglin Infants from 1982 to 1984. The family's journey took them to Korea and the UK, but they eventually found their way back to Singapore, completing a full circle.
