Alumni Grant Reports |
Moving abroad on my own for the first time was an unforgettable experience. Thanks to the Alumni Grant, I had the opportunity to take a summer course in Shanghai, which allowed me to embrace a new kind of independence. Although I had moved countries before, this felt different. Back in Italy it was harder to practise Chinese regularly, so this course gave me the chance to continue learning while fully immersed in the language and culture.
I was placed in the most advanced language class, with almost daily lessons and regular homework. The pace was demanding but extremely rewarding. It allowed me to challenge myself, strengthen my Chinese, and build lasting friendships with my classmates.
At first, I assumed that my background in Chinese would make adapting to life in Shanghai straightforward. However, I soon discovered that language was only one part of the experience. Learning to navigate the city, adjusting to local customs, and embracing cultural differences became just as important. Being alone in a foreign country was intimidating at first, but it pushed me to grow. I learned to approach new situations with an open mind and to step beyond my comfort zone. Outside the classroom, I made a conscious effort to immerse myself in the culture. By my second week, I was already attending a dinner conducted entirely in Chinese.
I tried to say yes to every opportunity, whether it was joining cultural activities such as learning to make authentic xiao long bao or travelling to nearby cities to visit temples and historic sites. These experiences gave me cultural insights that no textbook could ever provide.
Living alone abroad also presented unexpected challenges, such as falling ill and navigating the language barrier when buying medicine. These moments ultimately helped me become more adaptable, resourceful, and confident. On a personal level, this journey shaped me in ways that went far beyond language learning. I became more independent, flexible, and open to new perspectives. The soft skills I developed, along with the ability to communicate more effectively across cultures, will be invaluable for my future personal and professional goals.
By the end of the programme, I had deepened my language proficiency, gained firsthand cultural insights, and grown as an individual. I am deeply grateful to the Tanglin community for making this transformative experience possible, and I hope more students will be inspired to take on similar challenges abroad. My biggest advice is to say yes to as many opportunities as you can!
