March 2009

Alex Scoular

We were delighted to welcome back  Alex Scoular (Class of 1997) on 16th March.  Alex attended Tanglin with his two brothers Mark and James up until 1990.  His mother was also a teacher at Tanglin.  His brother Mark also returned to Tanglin 3  years ago and is currently Year 7 tutor and PE Specialist teacher.

After leaving TTS, Alex went to UWC SEA for two years and then completed his senior school education at Petersfield, near Portsmouth in England before going to the University of Gloucester in Cheltenham and Gloucester taking a four year course including a one year placement in Limerick, Ireland and gaining a Master in Sports Development.

Alex has a really exciting job working with the British Cycling Federation working in the Development Department with the goal of getting more young people into the sport.  As one of England’s more successful sports in the 2008 Olympics, this is obviously a very rewarding area in which to work.

This was Alex’s first visit back to Singapore for 10 years so apart from the campus being completely different and barely recognizable, Singapore itself has also changed dramatically in that time, with large areas of buildings on land that has been reclaimed from the sea in that time.

However, Alex was able to meet up and reminisce with Afandi and was pleased to hear that there were others at Tanglin from his years here.  He shared with us one memory that almost became a legend of a teacher Mr Sherlock getting a fish-hook caught in his mouth during a school trip to Pulau Tioman.  In those days the students visited Pulau Tioman during Year 6 – let’s hope Mr Sherlock has recovered completely from that misadventure!

Robbie Hoyes-Cock

Less than a week later, one of Alex’s fellow alumni also visited us, but unlike Alex, he will be able to drop by quite regularly as he works and lives in Singapore.  Like Alex, Robbie Hoyes-Cock (Class of 1999) also went from Tanglin to UWC SEA but then onto Eton College where he was a school friend of Prince Wiliam and then onto Bristol University where he graduated in Law.

Robbie initially worked in the family business and also Citibank but then in 2005 he formed B-Yond with a business partner, a private party organiser in Dubai.

Robbie now also runs Be At TV in Asia. Be At TV is an online global community connecting venues, clubs & clubbers, artists & DJ's and music fans; featuring exclusive full length audio-visual sets from the world's finest electronic music talent from venues across the globe.   Take a look at the website www.be-at.tvto see how you can sign up and enter a world of music on demand.

Both these ventures Robbie initiated because of the combination of his party organising experience, his local network in Singapore and the absence of a monthly themed private club night in Singapore.

So Robbie is well known in the entertainment business in Singapore and we look forward to seeing him at school more often as he has just moved into his new place on the Wessex estate just around the corner from school.

Robbie has lots of memories of Tanglin and even though he didn’t recognize a single part of the campus which has all changed since his attendance here, he also remembers lots of our staff here including Mrs Chandran, Afandi and Uncle Wong and when asked if he had a particular memory to share, he told of us of one of his teachers, Mrs Weiner who brought in a cake for her students every Friday!

Benjamin, Joshua and Isabelle Waha

Completing our visitors during March are the Waha family who visited us on 31st March from the UK where they are now based in West London.

Benjamin, Joshua and Isabelle left Tanglin in the Summer of 2005 from Year 3, Reception and Nursery respectively.  They visited us with their Mum, Diana, to see what had changed on campus while they have been away.

Ben met up with his friends Alex, William and Thomas from his class in Tanglin who he remembers fondly and with whom he has kept in contact since he left Singapore.  He now attends Colet Court School which is a preparatory school for St Pauls in London.  Although his new school is very different to Tanglin, he tells us that it is "brilliant!”

Joshua and Isabelle don’t really have many memories of Tanglin as they left when they were so young, they are now attending a local school in Kew to which they are able to cycle from home each day.

But Ben particularly was very keen to visit Tanglin, he had such good friends here and he remembers well his favourite teacher from Tanglin, Mr Woodrow who was his teacher in Year 3.
